Laura Esther Newman, 101, formerly of Anthon, died Wednesday, January 19, 2000 at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 22, 10:30 a.m. at the church of Christ in Anthon with Pastor Keith Hair officiating. Madge Petersen served as pianist with Keith and Nancy Hair singing. Pallbearers were Vincent Beaubien, Dale Bolles, John O’Connell, Alvin Roggatz, Wes Baldwin and Calvin Gothier. A prayer service was held Friday, January 21, at 7 p.m. at Armstrong Chapel in Anthon. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, under direction of Armstrong Funeral Service.

She was born May 31, 1898 near Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Bobbie Ann (McCall) Crum. She lived in the Castana, Rodney and Mapleton area. She was united in marriage on September 9, 1913 to Oath Newman at Onawa, Iowa. The couple moved to the Anthon area in 1934. He died September 4, 1975.

She was a member of the Church of Christ, the Rebekah Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary McNiff Unit #398, all of Anthon.

Survivors include two daughters-in-law, May Newman of Anthon and Pauline Newman of Correctionville; 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents; four sons, Harry, Leonard, Harold and Loyd, one daughter, Irene Newell; two great-grandsons, a great-granddaughter and six brothers and sisters.
