Ute, Iowa—Archie W. Mahoney, 81, a former long-time resident of Ute and Ute mayor and councilman, and formerly of Sioux City and Soldier, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 29, 1999 at St Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri following a long illness.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ute with the Rev. Edgar Bode officiating. Burial will be in the St Clair Cemetery in Ute with military rites conducted by the American Legion Aaby Post 442 and the VFW Post 5605, both of Ute. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Mahoney was born October 4, 1918, in David City, Nebraska, the son of Archie and Minnie (Hadenfeld) Mahoney. He was raised in Sioux City and Denison, Iowa. He attended high school and Army service schools.

He is a veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of first sergeant and serving with the 95th Infantry Division. He participated in the D- Day invasion on Omaha Beach, the Battle of the Bulge and was recognized as one of the Ironmen of Metz. He received three Bronze service stars and one Bronze Star medal.

He was self-employed in the farm seed business, owning Marten’s Seed Store until retiring in 1985. He married Helen Kiepe. She died in 1981.

He served 10 years on the Ute City Council and 22 years as Ute Mayor. He was on the Charter Oak-Ute School Board for 16 years and served five years on the Western Hills Area Education Agency Board.

He was on the board of the Monona County/Municipal Law Enforcement Center, the Monona County Crime Commission and the Monona County Landfill Commission. He was chairman of the Monona County Office of Emergency Planning during the time of the 911 emergency system was established. He received numerous awards for his volunteer work involving senior citizen issues, including an outstanding volunteer award from Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad.

He was a delegate to the 1989 Older Iowans Legislature. He was active with the Ute and Sioux City senior citizen centers. He was president of the volunteers group at the Siouxland Senior Center, chairman of the Area IV Agency on Aging Board and president of the Onawa Chapter of AARP. He volunteers as an insurance counselor with the Iowa Insurance Commission. He was a member of the Older Iowans’ Task Force for U.S. Sen. Tom Harkins, D-Iowa.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent for 32 years. He was a member of the Ute Commercial Club, American Legion and the Iowa Seed Dealers Association.

Survivors include four daughters, Sandra Hass, Kathy Janvrin and Maureen Mahoney, all of Overland Park, Kan. And Patricia Swanson of Ames, Iowa; one son, James Mahoney of Omaha; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five sisters, Rachel Neumann of Omaha, Ina Kleckner of Denison, Lorena Balderson of Phoeniz, Geneva Helmsing of Fairway, Kan, and Gladys Morton of Torrington, Wyo. and his long-time companion, Kay MacNicol of Sioux City.

Memorials may be directed in his name to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Sunday School, the Senior Center of Ute or the Siouxland Senior Center.
