Sherman B. Williams 1931-2009

Sherman B. Williams, age 78, of Danbury, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at Burgess health Center in Onawa, Iowa, following an extended illness.

Funeral services were held 1:00 P.M. Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Smithland, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Karen Handke officiated with burial following in the Mapleton Cemetery. Military honors were conducted by the Mapleton American Legion. Born July 17, 1931, in Pikeville, Kentucky, Sherman B. Williams was the son of Sherman Buell Williams and Edyth Hayton Ratliff. He graduated from Pikeville High School with the Class of 1949, then attended Pikeville College. Soon afterward he joined the United States Air Force and served for twenty years. Sherman then worked for the United States postal Service, retiring after twenty years.

Sherman was united in marriage to Jo Cox on April 20, 1953. Together they raised three children, Sharen, Donna, and Gary.

An avid sports fan, Sherman was always rooting for the Dallas Cowboys. He also had a fondness for model trains.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jo; two daughters, Sharen (Jim) Thompson of new Braunfels, TX, Donna (Chris) Kallas of Mapleton, and Gary (Lorie) Williams of Simpsonville, SC; five grandchildren, Ryan and Garrett Smith, Chris Lee, and Adam and Tara Kallas; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Edyth Hayton Ratliff of Kentucky; a sister, Gay Bruner of Alabama; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Theresa Jo Williams; his father, Sherman Williams; a grandson, Wesley Thompson; and a sister, Joyce Williams.
