Daryl Edwin Scheer 1948-2009

Daryl Edwin Scheer was born on April 22,1943, he died December 26, 2009 at the age of 61. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Eugene Ernst officiating. Message in the music was provided by Julis Hamann, organist and vocalist. Songs include “The Lord’s Prayer”, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace” and “Holy, Holy, Holy”. Pallbearers were Norma Parada, Dave Rose, Denny McCall, Joe Christophersen, Roger Uhl, mike Flanigan, Ron Lansink and Steve Smith. Honorary Pallbearers were Grand and Cindy Armstrong and John Stoll. Interment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Mapleton.

Daryl was born on the Scheer farm where he was raised. Daryl always said he knew the doctor was coming to bring him into the world when he heard the dog, Shep, was barking. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton where he remained a lifelong member. He graduated from Maple Valley High School with the class of 1967. He went on to attend Iowa Lakes Community college where he graduated in 1969. After college he returned home to wait to be called to serve our County. He was assigned number 316 in the draft lottery for Woodbury County, but never was called to serve his Country. Daryl was united in marriage to Connie Hamman at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton on September 18, 1970. To this union were born two children. Amy and Bryan. He worked at Bill’s Skelly Service Station, and since 1972 worked at the Walter Funeral Home and Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. He also worked at Maple Valley Community School as a bus Driver for 19 years, all this while still being a full time farmer.
Daryl served his church over the years as a Sunday School teacher, as Elder, and as head of the Property Board. He was also a member of the Mapleton Flying club and Served as Secretary. Daryl enjoyed visiting with his friends in and around Mapleton and his friend in Canada, fishing during the summer as well as the winter, and reading his farm magazines on his leather recliner. Daryl loved spending time with his family and especially the newest addition, his grandson.

He is survived by Connie, his wife of 39 years; one daughter, Amy Scheer and Tue Nguyen of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one son, Bryan Scheer and Betsy Tucker of Mapleton, Iowa; and one grandson, Caden Bryan Scheer; one sister-in-law, Vickie Merriman and her husband, Corky of Sioux City, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, Howard Watson of Liberty, Missouri and Lloyd Hamman and his wife, Linda of Hampton, Iowa; and mother-in-law, Anna Marie Hamman of Odebolt, Iowa; along with several nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and May (Wasmund) Scheer; one older brother, Wayne Scheer; and one older sister, Jean Watson. Arrangements were under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Homes.
