Dorothy L. Archer 1921-2009

Dorothy L. Archer, 88, Onawa, Iowa died Monday, December 28,2009, with her family at her side, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa following a lengthy illness. Dorothy Lucille Leisinger, the eldest of seven children, was born April 24, 1921 in rural Ticonic, Iowa to Lewis and Grace (Riley) Leisinger. She was raised and attended many rural schools in the Soldier, Turin and Castana areas.

After her schooling, she worked for several families helping them with their children until her marriage to Raymond Archer march 10, 1938 in Onawa, Iowa. The couple spent most of their married life in rural Monona County where they raised their five daughters and a son.

Dorothy’s love of life was cooking, baking and being around her family and friends. She loved taking care of others and was always there when needed. She was a very talented woman; self-taught in various skills including sewing, canning and upholstering.

She was baptized at the First Christian church in Onawa and was a longtime member. In 2004 following the death of her husband of 65 years, she made her home with her daughter, Hope Thelander where she was lovingly cared for by all her children until her move to Pleasant View Care Center, where she has resided for the past 3 years. She loved it there and they all quickly became her second family. Dorothy was loved and adored by all who met her because of her gentle caring manner. She will always be remembered for her ability to throw together a meal of fried chicken, chicken and noodles and pies for 20 to 25 people who might show up for Sunday dinner.

Survivors include her daughters, Hope Thelander (Clifford Lee) and Carol Otto all of Onawa; Gail Van Winkel (Vern Slatton) of Pevely, MO and Beverly (Dave) Anderson of Blencoe, IA; a son, Rick Archer of Onawa (Kelly Parsley of Whiting); grandchildren, Kim ( Jon) Berens, Jody Ewing (Dennis Ryan), Lori (Steve) Mathes, Kysa Ewing and Brett (Debbie) Ewing all of Onawa, Tammy (Keivn) Struble of Zephyrhills, FL, Terri (Jeff) Ruthkiewicz of Charlton, MA, Tracy Schroeder of Foley, MO, Troy Hane (LaDawn Seward) of Onawa, Michael (Theresa) Ooten of Oklahoma City, Ok, Jesse Ooten of Tennessee, Danielle VanWinkel (Erick Russell) of Pevely Missouri, Daniel VanWinkel of Belleville, IL, Diana (John) roach of Belleville, Il, Jon Anderson (Meryl Harcum) of Blencoe, Chuck Anderson of Onawa, Chris(Jackie) archer of Onawa, Cody Archer of Onawa; 29 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren; a brother; Vernon (Mariann) Leisinger of Moville, IA; a sister Donna (Marvin) Larson of Ute, IA and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

In addition to her husband, Raymond, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, June Rose Ooten; two grandsons, Shawn Ooten and Todd Archer; three sisters, Gladys Phipps, Darlene Wacheldorf and Norma Kohler; a brother, Freddie Leisinger and three son-in-laws, Dan VanWinkel, Earl Thelander and Fred Otto.

Funeral services were held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 2, 2010 at First Christian church at Onawa with Pastor Todd Owen officiating. Music selections were “Keep On The Sunny Side”, “How Great Thou Art”, “I’ll Fly Away”, “One Day At A Time” and “When The Saints Go Marching In”. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery at a later date. Casket bearers were Dorothy’s Grandsons.
