Gregory D. Uhl 1950-2009

Gregory D. Uhl, age 59, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Thursday, December 31, 209, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

A Mass was held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, Iowa under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. Msgr. Kenneth Seifried officiated with burial following in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Ida Grove. Visitation was held at the church on Sunday from 1-5 p.m., with the family present from 3-5 p.m. There was a Scripture Service at 3 p.m., officiated by Deacon Mike Stover.

Born August 21, 1950, in Sioux City, Iowa, Gregory Donald Uhl was the son of Donald and Lois (Wolterman) Uhl. He grew up and received his education in the Mapleton area where he graduated from Maple Valley High School with the Class of 1969.

On September 12, 1970, Greg was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Judy A. Hamann, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Danbury. The couple made their home in Ida Grove where they raised their two children, Dennis and Ann.

Greg worked one year at Marv’s Provisions at Vail. He started in the Paint Department at GOMACO in August, 1970. In 1977, he was named the department’s lead-person, and served as the supervisor from 1986 through 1990, when the paint rooms were consolidated and moved to GOMACO’S plant #2. At that time, he again began serving as the department’s lead-person, and was instrumental in 1992 reopening of the Paint Department at GOMACO Plant #1. Greg was the 2009 H.W. Godbersen Award winner.

Greg was a member of Sacred heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and in his spare time loved working on the family farm.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; two children and their spouses, Dennis and Lori Uhl of Sloan. And Ann and James Kelly of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Benjamin and Josie Uhl and Rebecca Kelly; his father, Donald uhl of Mapleton; two brothers and their wives, Jerry and Sharon Uhl of Ida Grove, and Tom and Deb Uhl of Danbury; and a sister, Jean Uhl of Sioux City. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Cecelia Hamann of Ida Grove; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Dick and Connie Hamann, and Don and Jane Hamann, all of Battle Creek, and Linda and Paul Crom of Holdrege, Ne; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Uhl in April, 1987; a brother, Doug Uhl in November 2009; and his father-in-law, Dernard Hamann in May 1986.
