Homer Edgar Black, Blencoe, Iowa, died on Friday, March 24, 1989, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting following a long illness. Death came at the age of 96 years 5 months and 9 days. He had resided at Pleasant View since 1984.

He was born October 15, 1892, in Trenton, Iowa. His parents were Thomas E. and Elvira (McCullum) Black. He married Lucille Hime January 4, 1922 at Onawa. The couple made their home at Blencoe until 1940 when they moved to the Onawa area where he farmed until 1963, at which time he retired and they returned to Blencoe. Lucille died May 18, 1975 at Onawa.

Homer served with the U.S. Army during World War I and was a prisoner of war in Germany for two years.

He was a member of the UCC Congregational at Blencoe. He was a member of the VFW and was the last surviving World War I veteran of the Blencoe Stevens-Kelley American Legion Post #665.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Darlene) Ferris of Blair, Nebraska, Mrs. Leland (Betty) Hileman of San Jose, California and Mrs. Ralph (Donna) Wickersham Jr. of Turin; five sons, Robert and Richard, both of Onawa, Donald of Blencoe, Gene of Auburn, Washington, and Edward of Sloan, 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and seven sisters.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, 1989 at the United Church of Christ Congregation in Onawa with Rev. Louis Aitken officiating. The organist, Mrs. Jack Jordan, accompanied the soloist, Mrs. Fred Gibson, who sang “In The Garden” and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere”.

Bearers were Gordon Walker, Stanley Jirovsky, C.E. Jirovsky, Patrick Delanty, Glen Walker and David Zima.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery at Blencoe with Military Rites by Stevens-Kelly American Legion Post #665, Blencoe, Iowa, Marvin Keelem, Commander and Monona County VFW Post #2694, Ronald Heisterkamp, Commander.

Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
