22 February 2001Fred J. Bryan, 81, of Blencoe, Iowa died Monday, February 12, 2001 at Burgess Health Center.
Fred was born October 21, 1919 in Blencoe, Iowa, the son of Fred and Fern (McLaughlin) Bryan. He graduated from Blencoe High School in 1936. After high school he farmed in the Blencoe area until 1942 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was in the reserves and was called back for the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952.
On September 24, 1950, he married Bertha Louise Powell. He worked at Swift Packing Plant in Sioux City for 29 years before retiring in 1984.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW 2694 in Onawa. He played softball with the Venture Inn town team and loved to hunt, fish and work in his garden.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, Michael T. Bryan of Onawa and David Bryan of Rosalie, NE; a daughter and her husband, Cindy and Bill Gantz of Onawa; five grandchildren, Heather Bryan of Whiting, Melissa Dietschy and B. J. Gantz of Onawa, Pat Bryan of Shalimar, Fl. and Kelli Bryan of Lincoln, NE; three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001 at Blencoe United Church of Christ with Pastor John Noer officiating. Musical selections were “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,”sung by Patty Gibson. Bev Collison was organist. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery at Blencoe. Military Rites were conducted by the United States Marine Corp. Visitation was from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Rush Family Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Casket bearers were Logan Butcher, John Flamming, Brad Walker, Dwight Harms, John Adams and Bob Collison, Jr. Honorary bearers were Frank Adams, John Ankerstjerne, Gary Warengo, Bob Collison, Sr., Glen Walker, Dean Majors and Si Pilus.
Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care.
