Virginia Massie, 87, Sioux City, Iowa died Thursday, August 20, 2009 at her residence at North-Park Senior Living Community at Sioux City, Iowa.

Virginia Ruth was born February 12, 1922 at Onawa, Iowa, the daughter of Curt Franz and Lorine (Kahrs) Hoffman. She was raised on a farm near Onawa and graduated from Onawa High School in 1940. She attended Western Union College at Le Mars, Iowa and received her teaching certificate. Her first school was a country school in Moorhead and through the years she taught at various schools in Iowa and Texas until retirement.

Virginia and Stanley Alan Massie were united in marriage June 21, 1942 at Harlington, Texas. They made their home in various locations in Texas and Iowa and April 2008 they moved to North-Park.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux City and a former member of Concordia Lutheran and Shepherd of the Hills both at San Antonio. Virginia enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, needlework and always had a love for cats.

Survivors include her husband of over 66 years, Stanley of Sioux City, a son and his wife, Stanley and Valerie Massie of Spring Creek, NV; a grandson, three granddaughters; a great-granddaughter and two sisters, June Riddle and her husband Merle Savage of Sioux City and Dorothy Gust of Mapleton, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Phyllis Nutt and Mary Zahn.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Faith Lutheran Church at Onawa, Iowa with Pastor Steven Hetzel and Pastor Quentin Quanbeck officiating. Music selections were the congregational singing “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” with Donna Rae Hyatt, descant and “Just As I Am” and a solo, “His Eye Is On The Sparrow”. Darren Goslar was soloist and Deb Lauritsen was organist. Burial was in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation was 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Casket bearers were Steve, Tom and Tony Gust and John and Mark Riddle and John Robinson.
