MAPLETON, Iowa -- Harvey Lafrentz, 95, of Mapleton died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Elmwood Care Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, rural Charter Oak, Iowa, with the Rev. Eugene Ernst officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Harvey Lafrentz was born Oct. 31, 1914, in rural Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Henry and Amanda (Kahl) Lafrentz. He grew up in the Holstein, Iowa, area and got his early education at a rural school, completing the eighth grade.

On June 12, 1938, Harvey was united in marriage to Ethel Hamann at Battle Creek, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. They retired and moved in to Mapleton in 1987.

Harvey was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township, Charter Oak as well as the Lutheran Layman League.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include one son and his wife, Delbert and Rita Lafrentz of Mapleton; one daughter and her husband, Audrey Ann and Mahlon Pekarek of Blencoe, Iowa; grandchildren, Todd and Sarah Lafrentz of Fremont, Calif., Tricia Lafrentz and Michael Wingfield of Laveen, Ariz., Bernice Lafrentz of Des Moines and Trent and Carissa Lafrentz of Tooele, Utah; two stepgrandchildren, T.J. Palmer and Melanie Mink of Denison, Iowa, and Becky Palmer and Joel Robinson of Des Moines; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Brody Lafrentz of Tooele, Utah, and Kaitlyn Lafrentz of Fremont, Calif.; two great-stepgrandchildren, Cammerin Palmer of Denison and Angelea Robinson of Des Moines; two sisters-in-law, Cecelia Hamann of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Grace Lafrentz of Galva, Iowa; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ethel, on Oct. 31, 1996; a grandson, Troy Lafrentz on Aug. 9, 2006; one sister and brother-in-law, LaVerna and Clarence Ludvigson; and one brother, Roy Lafrentz.
