SIOUX CITY -- Harlan Joseph "Tyke" Derby, 52, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died unexpectedly Friday, June 5, 2009, at his residence.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, with the Rev. Don Collison officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Cemetery, Little Sioux, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Harlan Joseph Derby was born March 25, 1957, in Sioux City, the son of Harlan Francis and Karen (Bremmers) Derby. He was raised by Theodore Hayden (the only father he ever knew). He attended school at Riverview Elementary and Riverside High School in Sioux City. He had eight brothers and sisters, Trish and Curt Feeckes, Linda and Dewey Schager and Ella Benson, all of Sioux City, Kelli and Blake Perkins of Anthon, Iowa, Ted Jr. of Onawa, Ron and Suzanne Hayden of Le Mars, Iowa, and Vicky Walters of Onawa.

He married Deb Liston in May 1975. To that marriage was a son, Jason Derby of Sioux City and two stepsons, Rodney Derby and Brett Thompsen, both of Des Moines. He later married Roxanne Hall on March 4, 2005. To that marriage, he was blessed with two stepsons, Chad Ringgenberg and Mathew Ringgenberg, both of Des Moines.

He lived life to the fullest. He worked various jobs as a cook in Des Moines and Sioux City. He worked produce stands with his son, Jason. He loved fishing, working in the yard, spending time with his family, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He also loved singing karoke with his sister, Linda.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Teri Heald; and his grandparents, Dorothy and Carl Jensen and Grandma Mary Hayden.
