Victor LaVerne Strait 1920-2009

Victor LaVerne Strait was born March 29, 1920, the son of Victor and Hannah Olson Strait. He died Friday, January 16, 2009, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 82.

LaVerne was born on a farm near Charter Oak. He was baptized in Christ and later confirmed at St John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak by Rev. Schrader. He received his education in the Charter Oak area. On February 22, 1940, LaVerne was united in marriage to Martha Hingst at St John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. The couple made their home on a farm and were blessed with the birth of one daughter. Together they farmed in Crawford County for 40 years. In 1978 they retired and moved to Charter Oak, where LaVerne worked for Charter Oak Ag Supply and Lyons Publishing Company.

He was a very loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards and socializing with his friends. He was a member of St John Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder for six years and was a board member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League.

LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Martha in 1996; one brother, Leonard and his wife Adel; one sister, Esther and her husband Herb and one brother-in-law, Alvin. Survivors include one daughter, Janice and her husband John; four grandchildren; Rick; Dennis and his wife Sherri; Dan and Amy; four great-grandchildren; Eric, Mike, Dustin and Shane; one sister, Dorothy; one sister-in-law, Shirley; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at St John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiatied the service and graveside rites at St. Clair Cemetery in Ute, Iowa. Organist Art Beeck provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, “I’m But A Stranger Here”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me”. Serving as pallbearers were Dennis DeMey, Rick DeMey, Dan DeMey, Shane DeMey, John Houska and Loren Strait. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them for followship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
