WHITING, Iowa -- Dorothy R. Carlson, 91, of Whiting passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Hospice House in Omaha.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Whiting, with the Rev. Reva B. Karstens officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Dorothy was born June 2, 1918, near Pisgah, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Helen (Hester) Niedermyer. She was raised in the Pisgah area and attended Windy Ridge country school before entering Magnolia High School, where she graduated with the class of 1936. Later, she was a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone and also Pacific Telephone and Telegraph in San Francisco, Calif.

Dorothy and George "Swede" Carlson were united in marriage on June 22, 1952, in Whiting, where the couple made their home. She was the Whiting city clerk for 13 years, until her retirement in 1983. Swede passed away on Dec. 17, 1968.

She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. She enjoyed reading and gardening.

Survivors include a brother and his wife, Milton and Mary Niedermyer of Pisgah; six nieces and nephews, Dorothy (Ottie) Wagenknecht, Marilyn (Dan) Newland, Linda (Mark) Rabinowitz, Frank (Stephanie) Niedermyer, Tom (Patty) Niedermyer and Hazel (Les) Granum; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister and her husband, Lena and Paul Beauseigneur; a nephews and his wife, Jim and Robin Niedermyer; and a niece, Lori Wagenknecht.
