BLENCOE, Iowa -- Logan Junior "Butch" Butcher, 82, of Blencoe passed away Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa, with Pastors Ken and Mary Wells officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at Blencoe, with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2694 of Monona County and American Legion Stevens Kelley Post 665. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Logan was born Jan. 6, 1927, in Decatur City, Iowa, the oldest of 10 children, to Fred and Helen (Bright) Butcher. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Osceola, Iowa, on a farm until 1940, when they moved to Peru, Iowa. He joined the U.S. Army in 1945, and served in several countries and during three wars until his retirement in 1965. After his discharge, he moved near Onawa, Iowa, and was an automobile mechanic 14 years. Butch also worked for James Alexander in the fall for 17 years.

He married Evelyn Conway Sarff in August 1966. The couple moved to Blencoe and owned and operated a filling station until his retirement in 1990. Evelyn passed away in December 1992. On Dec. 26, 1993, he married Darlene (Corn) Archer of Moorhead, Iowa. They made their home in Blencoe.

He was a life member of Monona County V.F.W. Post 2694 of Onawa, where he was a post Commander General for years, American Legion Stevens Kelley Post 665 at Blencoe, and Blencoe United Church of Christ. He enjoyed softball, golf, fishing, camping, raising beautiful roses, watching NASCAR races, traveling, cards, jigsaw puzzles and dominos.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Darlene of Blencoe; six stepchildren, Lowell "Buzz" (Pat) Sarff of Sioux City, Sandy Peterson of Riedell, Texas, Randy (Angie) Archer of Sioux City, Dennie (Debbie) Archer of Castana, Iowa, Pam Stillman (Kevin Parr) of Moorhead, and Mark (Christina) Archer of Castana; a stepdaughter-in-law, Donna Archer of Moorhead; four sisters, Sally Brobst of Warsaw, Mo., Mary (C.J.) Anderson of Ashland, Neb., Iva (Sonny) Laird of Whitefield, Okla., and Eva (Dick) Funkhouser of Chappel, Neb.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn; parents; two stepsons, Ronald Archer and James Sarff; four brothers, Bobbie, Darrell, Donald and Jackie; and a sister, Marie Sivard.

Butch was a true gentleman and a man of honor who loved this country and his family. He lived his life to the fullest and brought much love to those around him. He will forever be dear to our hearts.
