MOORHEAD, Iowa -- Bruce L. Graybill, 81, Moorhead passed away Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at a hospital in Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Moorhead Christian Church, with the Rev. Ron Keith officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service at Onawa, Iowa.

Bruce was born in Willow Township, Monona County, Iowa, on Sept. 13, 1928, the son of Ivan M. and Ruth (Moore) Graybill. The family moved to a farm in Jordan Township in Monona County. He attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1947.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1951, and served during the Korean War, but was discharged in 1952 due to family health. He re-enlisted in 1955, and retired in 1975 with the rank of sergeant first class. He was stationed in Washington, D.C. with military intelligence. During that time, he spent two tours in Germany, returning to D.C. after the first tour and going to Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, then returning to the D.C. area. He spent a final tour to Germany in 1971 and retired there in 1975. He was always proud to have served as Honor Guard in the Rotunda for President Kennedy in 1962.

Bruce and Bonita Pedersen were united in marriage in July 1957. They were blessed with two daughters. After Bruce's discharge they retired to Moorhead, where Bruce was employed with Moorhead Co-op and also helped on the Ronnie Shol and Olaf and Oscar Sandvold farms. His hobby was locksmithing and he enjoyed sharing his talent helping anyone in the community.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Bonita of Moorhead; two daughters, Barbara (Mark) Jensen of Pisgah, Iowa, and Brenda (Walker) Carrigan of Soldier, Iowa; four grandchildren, Angela and Michael Jensen and Nathan and Sydney Carrigan; two nieces, Summer Erlandson of Ute, Iowa, and Mali (Bo) Fox and children of Turin, Iowa; a nephew, Eric (Kelly) Erlandson and children of Lincoln, Neb.; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his only sibling, Glenda Graybill; and a brother-in-law, Charles "Swede" Erlandson.
