ONAWA, Iowa -- John Henry Lund, 83, of Onawa died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at his residence with his family by his side.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Mike Cahill officiating. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery, Soldier, Iowa, with military rites conducted by a U.S. Army honor guard and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2694 of Monona County. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

John was born May 12, 1918, in Moorhead, Iowa, the son of Halver and Anna (Blowers) Lund. He and his family moved to the Lund family farm, west of Onawa, when he was 2 years old.

John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Medical Division from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. He served in several battles and campaigns, including D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. His awards and decorations include five Bronze Star Medals and a Silver Star Medal.

He was married to Ruth Nielsen on Sept. 30, 1947, in Moorhead. To this union, three children were born, Roger, Lois and Jill.

He was a member of First Christian Church and American Legion David McNeill Post 129 of Onawa.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Roger Lund and Hope Taylor of Onawa; two daughters, Lois Lund and Duane Davis of Port Townsend, Wash., and Jill Marshall and Tom Guerin of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; three grandchildren, Sena, Miro and Orin Luther-Lund; and three sisters, Vennie Harris, Evelyn Reed and Helen Ploof.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Onawa Public Library Campaign Fund or Burgess Hospice.
