Another Monona County Pioneer Called Home

Elizabeth Ross was born at Butler, Ohio, March 29, 1851, where she grew to womanhood, April 4, 1882. She was united in marriage to Livingston VanDorn, at Mansfield, Ohio and immediately left for his home in Rodney, where she has since resided on the same farm until her death, May 10, 1927 following an illness of several years. About thirty years ago she united with the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Smithland, remaining a faithful member until her death.

Just a year ago to the day her husband preceded her in death, he having resided on the same farm for seventy one years.

Two daughters, Mrs., Florence Juhl and Miss Esther VanDorn both of Rodney are left to mourn the loss of a tender, loving mother.

The funeral services were conducted by Elders H.H. Hicks of Nevada and V.G. Anderson of Sioux City, in the Congregational Church last Thursday afternoon and interment was made in the Smithland Cemetery.

Mrs. VanDorn with her husband witnessed much of the development of this country, and were well known among the older residents for many miles around.

To the bereaved ones, we of the office extend our sincerest sympathies. Death is mysterious intimae that sooner or later sweep us all to his breast. Sometimes his coming is welcomed as it means rest and peace from the infirmities of life, sometimes in the blossom and joy of life, sometimes are the sparks of life has had the time to flame or flourish, and then it is hard to understand. Life is a mystery and only one source has ever given much information on the subject and that is the Book we call the Bible. Within its covers are many things hard to understand, yes many beyond our understanding, but there are many things that we can understand which are given for our comfort and encouragement. It is well for us to read and learn and love their messages, and then death will hold no terror and our gravitas are assuaged through our knowledge of their import.
