MAPLETON, Iowa -- Donald LaVern Kirkpatrick, 74, of Grayson, Ga., formerly of Mapleton, passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grayson United Methodist Church, with Dr. Phil Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Baptist Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 9 p.m. today at Tom M. Wages Funeral Service, Snellville Chapel, Snellville, Ga. Condolences may be sent online to www.wagesfuneralhome.com .

Mr. Kirkpatrick was born Oct. 27, 1932, in Sioux City, the son of Emery and Eva (Schultz) Kirkpatrick. He grew up on the farm and attended country school. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1951. He joined the U.S. Navy in January 1952.

He married the former Louise Hadden on April 3, 1954. They farmed in the Danbury, Iowa, area for 20 years before moving to Mapleton, where they established and operated Kirkpatrick Trucking from 1976 until retirement. They moved to Grayson, Ga., in 2002 to be near three of their daughters and their families.

He enjoyed watching the grandchildren play football, baseball, softball, wrestling and swimming. He was known to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Papa Vern."

He was a member of Grayson United Methodist Church and belonged to the Senior S.A.M. Club. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge 387 in Danbury, Iowa, and a past Master of Due Guard Lodge in Danbury. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a past Patron of the Danbury chapter. He enjoyed youth and had served as a Methodist Youth Fellowship councilor, was a substitute school bus driver and drove the high school wrestlers to their meets. While on the farm, he enjoyed participating in tractor pulls with his 4020 John Deere, where he won the Iowa State championship in 1967.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Louise Kirkpatrick; six children and their spouses, Doug and Patty of Terrell, Texas, Terri and Phil Pilgrim of Lawrenceville, Ga., Sherry and Bob Welte of Danbury, Iowa, Linda and Michael Dixon of Hoschton, Ga., Scot and Sharon of Mesa, Ariz., and Becky and Scott Donnelly of Grayson, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Hintz of Omaha; a sister, Joyce Wright of Sioux City; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother-in-law; a sister, Alvina Osborn; a sister-in-law, Barb Hadden; and a grandson, Ryan Pilgrim.
