Family and friends remember Nicki Maier

Nicolett (Nicki) Maier, age 51, of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and formerly of Mapleton, died Friday, June 8, 2001 at Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 11 at United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa, with Rev. Jim Morris and Rev. Dave Crow officiating. Organist was Marge Trelstad and vocalists were Jackie VanOosbree, Ruthie Hand, Pam Kragt and Dave and Kelley Fog. Additional services were held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday June 12 at St John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton with Pastor Shirley Textor and Pastor Jim Morris officiating. Burial was in Mt Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Marie Whiteing was the organist and prelude music included recorded Community Theatre music. As the family entered a video of Nicki singing, “The World is a Lamp Unto My Feet” was shown. Carol Dupic, Nicki’s close friend, had a reading/comment. Other music included “No One Cared Like You” and “Sometimes”, vocal duet by Jackie VanOosbree and Ruthie Hand. The eulogy was given by Ed Maier. A solo “Remember Me” was by Pam Kragt, a friend. Vocal duets of “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” and “Friends” was by Dave and Kelley Fog. A video “Irish Blessing” by former student of Nicki’s in Emmetsburg was also shown.
Balloons were released outside of the church and at the cemetery in Nicki’s honor. Prayer services were held Sunday evening at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg and Monday evening at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Nicolett (Nicki) Maier was born December 13, 1949, in Sioux City, Iowa to Leonard and Edith (Lee) Maier.

She was raised in Mapleton and was a 1968 graduate of Maple Valley High School where she was active in music activities. She attended Morningside College where she played in the band and was active in vocal activities.

She taught elementary school in Ottumwa for one year and then for twenty-seven years at Emmetsburg Middle and South Elementary School. She taught vocal music and revived and coached middle school girls basketball. She started a middle school swing choir program and led her choir to several awards.

She was active in Main Street Community Theatre, having directed the production of “Mame” and serving as musical director for the theatre for over twenty years.

She was a member of Emmetsburg United Methodist Church where she served as music director for several years and was a member of the bell choir. She was a member of the music group Harmony and as such, traveled delivering a musical ministry.

She was active in Relay for Life-Organizing and participating with several teams. She touched the lives of many cancer patients during her nine year fight.

She belonged to the Emmetsburg Country Club and was an avid golfer.

She is survived by her parents and a brother, Edward of Mapleton, Iowa. She also leaves a host of friends, former student and others who have been touched by her talent and caring.

Memorials may be directed to the Emmetsburg United Methodist Church, Main Street Community Theatre and the Emmetsburg Middle School Music Department.

Junior pallbearers were Luke Dupic, Lyle Dupic, Travis Fries, Brandy Worrell, Ryan Dupic, Joe Schany, Jessie Worrell and Barry Worrell.

Honorary pallbearers were Carol Dupic, Ruthie Hand, Jackie VanOosbree, Tena Hinkel, Judy Worrell, Pam Kragt, Diane Seaman, Judy McDowall, Jill Hobbs and Tammy Foels.

Pallbearers were Dean Newlon, Dave Ballman, Dale Evans, John Hand, Rick Dupic, Ron Seaman, Dr. John Kragt, Don McDowall, Mike Lyon, Roger Miller, Tom McNamara, Russ Worrell, Roger Jochims and Jason Hobbs
