Castana, Iowa-- Herbert Frederick Gosch, 78, of Castana died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Burgess Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa, with the Rev. Jim Little officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Soldier.

Mr. Gosch was born Oct 7, 1922 in Berne, Iowa; the son of Fredrich and Amalie (Henkel) Gosch. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended Berne County School.

He married Alice I. Rude on May 18, 1947, in Soldier. The couple made their home near Castana in 1949. He farmed and also worked as a carpenter and construction worker. He put up steel bins and was employed with Experimental Farm for several years. He also did custom baling.

He was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church, National Farmers Organization and the Farm Bureau.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Leonard and Diane of Castana and David and Linda of Charter Oak, Iowa; six daughters, Becky and her husband, Dennis Marcum of Moorhead, Iowa, Marla and her husband, Rick Bianchini, of South Sioux City, Wanita and her husband, Lloyd Myers Jr. of Onawa, Sharon and her husband, Bob Mahlberg of Soldier, Connie and her husband, Dave Jansen, of Onawa and Karen Gosch of Castana; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Ervin of Lineville, Iowa and a sister-in-law, Mable Gosch of Whiting, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant granddaughter and a brother, John.
