MAPLETON, Iowa -- Alma Knutson Tollakson Corbin, 91, of Mapleton died Friday, March 8, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Mrs. Corbin was born July 6, 1910, in a log cabin in rural Freeborn County, near Glenville, Minn., to John and Inger (Torgerson) Knutson. She attended School District 65 in Glenville, and later graduated from Albert Lea (Minn.) High School in 1929. She was an avid sports person. She was a good field hockey and volleyball player in high school. Alma attended normal school and was granted a teaching certificate. She then taught in rural Minnesota schools until the time of her marriage to Paul M. Tollakson in Spirit Lake, Iowa, on July 6, 1935.

After her marriage she relocated to Sioux Rapids, Iowa. There she was a homemaker and public school teacher until the death of her husband.

She later married Milford Glenn Corbin on June 23, 1962, in Sioux Rapids and moved to Mapleton, where she lived until her death. She taught in the Anthon-Oto Schools for several years. During this time she attended Buena Vista College in the summers and graduated with a bachelor's degree in elementary education, the first in her family to earn a college degree.

Alma Corbin trusted in Jesus Christ as her savior and was very active in her church, teaching Sunday school, coordinating Vacation Bible schools and Christmas programs. She held various offices in the many women's church groups. She enjoyed fishing and camping with her second husband and was always ready for a "friendly" game of cards around the kitchen table with friends and family.

Mrs. Corbin is survived by two brothers and their wives, Clifford and Elsie of St. Paul, Minn., and Luman and Louise of Albert Lea, Minn.; a sister, Mildred Knutson of Minneapolis; her children and their spouses, Doris and Richard Ofstun of Lincolnshire, Ill., John and Ruthie Tollakson of Sheridan, Wyo., Chuck and Gloria Corbin of Ames, Iowa, Fred and Ruth Corbin of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Gary Corbin of Omaha; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her second husband, Milford on July 10, 1996; her parents; three brothers in infancy; brothers, Lester, Henry and Arnold Knutson, all of Glenville, Minn.; brother, William of Albert Lea; sisters, Mrs. Carl (Olga) Erickson of Northwood, Iowa, and Mrs. Melvin (Viola) Herfendal of Seattle, Wash.; and a daughter, Mrs. Duane (Eleanore) Jerman of Pierson, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alma's honor.
