Catherine "Kate" Dettmann, daughter of Jacob and Caroline (Hoffmann) Geessmann, was born June 23, 1884 in Crawford County, Iowa and died Tuesday, December 25, 1973 at a hospital in Sioux City, Iowa. She had reached the age of 89 years, 6 months and 2 days.

Kate lived with her parents at Manilla, Iowa, as a young girl and later moved to Monona County. She married Paul Dettmann June 6, 1917 in Monona County. They farmed in the Mapleton community except for nine years when they farmed near Alta, in Buena Vista County. They retired in 1952 and returned to make their home in Mapleton.

She was a charter member of the St. Peter's United Church of Christ and took an active part in its early construction. She was also active in the women's guild,.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; two daughters, one son, three sisters and one brother.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Chris (Stella) Sievers, of Albert City, Iowa; two sons, Emeron of Kellogg, Iowa and Harold of Pasadena, California; three sisters, Miss Minnie Gessmann of San Fransico, Calif., Mrs. Tillie McMahn of ElMonte, California and Mrs. Fred Mundt of Manning, Iowa, one brother, Albert Gessmann of Coon Rapids, Iowa; six granchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 28, 1973 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Mapleton. Devotions were held at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Homer Perry officiated and burial was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton.
