Laurence Funkhouser was born January 14, 1899 in Lincoln Township, Monona County and passed away at his home in Whiting November 3, 1971 after a lingering illness. Death came at the age of 72 years, 9 months and 20 days. He was the eldest son of Charles and Fannie Funkhouser.

On January 18, 1922 he was united in marriage to Mildred Carroll of Castana, Iowa. To this union were born three daughters, Mrs Vivian Taylor of Hutchinson, Kan; Mrs George (Carol) Cole of Onawa and Mrs Cecil (Jane) Mercer, who preceded her father in death; also one son Rex Funkhouser of South Sioux City, Nebr. They also raised one granddaughter, Mrs Connie Perrin of DesMoines.

Laurence farmed for 10 years after his marriage, then was a road maintenance man for Monona County until his retirement 5 years age.
He was a member of the Church of Christ of Whiting, Eagles Lodge of Onawa and Modern Woodmen of America. He was a loving father and grandfather and a friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors besides his wife and children are 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, also 6 brothers, Melvin, Glen, Neal and Charles of Whiting, Floyd at Sloan and Frank of Concord, Calif; 3 sisters, Mrs Dorothy Mickolison of Sioux City, Mrs Floyd (Ada) Baker of Whiting and Mrs Ken (Hope) Rimmer of Cherokee, Iowa besides a number of other relatives.

Services were held Saturday, November 6, 1971 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ, Whiting, with the Rev Richard Lankford officiating. Nancy Linden was the organist. Bearers were Clifton Roberts, Roy Bellis, Clarence Lamb, Eldon Anderson, Ernest DeLashmutt and JN Hopkins.
Interment was in Harrison Cemetery near Whiting with arrangements by the Wood Funeral Home of Whiting.
