PISGAH, Iowa - Melvin Wesley Dawdy, 75, of Pisgah formerly of Whiting, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of Christ in Whiting, Iowa, with the Rev. Shawn Walden officiating. Burial will be in Hite Cemetery, rural Whiting. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Wood Funeral Home in Sloan, Iowa.

Mr. Dawdy was born March 29, 1924, at Smithland, Iowa, the son of Fred and Arillia (Phillips) Dawdy. He was raised in Smithland and in the Morningside area of Sioux City. He graduated from East High School. He graduated from Nashville School of Preaching in 1974.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was a sergeant in the artillery and a field medic. He was held a Prisoner of War in Germany in 1943.

He married June Green on Jan. 17, 1943, at Dakota City. The couple made their home in Whiting.

He was a carpenter, specializing in home construction and later in custom cabinetry. After retirement the couple operated a vegetable and produce business. They donated produce to the Senior Citizens Center. He was also an ordained minister of the Church of Christ.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in Whiting.

Survivors include his wife; four sons: Daniel and his wife, Diane, of Little Sioux, Iowa, Dennis and his wife, Terri, of Onawa, Iowa, Donald of Omaha, and Doug and his friend, Lisa Cox, of Whiting; eight daughters: Deanna and her husband, George Gartner of Sloan, Iowa, Donna and her husband, Merlin Klemme, of Lawrence, Kan., Dixi and her husband, Steve Carda, of Sioux City, Debbie and her husband, Ed Hyer, of Le Mars, Iowa, Dawn and her husband, Tom Beaulieu, of Hinton, Iowa, Darla and her husband, Al Meister, of South Sioux City, Darlene Hast of Whiting, and Denise Dawdy and her friend, Shane Blake, of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Lorrie Dawdy of Onawa; 46 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Ernest "Cleon" of Sioux City, and Stanley and his wife, Avon, of Maceo, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Orville; a son, Dean Dawdy; a granddaughter, Mindy Carda; and a grandson, Joey Nava.
