WHITING, Iowa -- Ervin A. Mander, 87, of Waverly, Iowa, formerly of Whiting, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly from natural causes.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Whiting Christian Church, with the Rev. Rusty Hedger officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa.

Ervin was born April 2, 1917, in rural Onawa, Iowa, the son of Edward and Alma (Johnson) Mander Sr. He attended the Whiting Public School. He served in the U.S. Army for four and one half years, fighting in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

On Aug. 28, 1955, he married Marjorie Miller in Sioux City. The couple farmed in Monona County, Iowa, until retiring in 1996. In January 2003, as failing health became an issue, the couple moved to the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly to be near relatives.

He was an active member of Whiting Christian Church since 1938, serving as deacon and trustee for many years. He was an assistant school bus driver for the Whiting school for 10 years and a longtime member of the American Legion Emery-Johnson Post 481, of Whiting.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Marjorie; two brothers, Elroy of Crescent, Iowa, and Elvin of Onawa, Iowa; several nieces and nephews and their families; many cousins; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward and Earl; and three sisters, Florence, Flavia and Muriel.
