WHITING, Iowa -- Roy G. Marnell Sr., 74, of Whiting died Friday, April 29, 2005, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, with the Rev. Kirk Cox officiating. Burial will be in Hite Cemetery, Whiting. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Roy George Marnell was born March 17, 1931, in Pleasant Grove, Minn., the fifth child of Frank George and Hazel Martha (Forrester) Marnell. He was raised in the Rochester, Minn., area and received his education in Forest Lake, Minn. In 1948, he served in the U.S. Navy on the destroyer U.S.S. Thomas.

He married Nancy Eleanor Gray on Oct. 3, 1956, in South Sioux City. The couple made their home in Sioux City before moving to Whiting in 1980. Roy worked at various companies including being a Caterpillar operator for a lumber company in Hood country of Oregon, Sioux City Vault Co., Sioux City Foundry, as a trucker for the U.S. mail, a mechanic, a cook on the Louisiana shrimp boat, LZ Walker and as a farm laborer in the Siouxland area.

Dearest to Roy's heart, he became a Pentecostal minister in the late 1960s and continued his ministry throughout his life. He loved to fish and hunt.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Nancy of Whiting; five sons, Roy George Jr. and his wife, Lisa of Blencoe, Iowa, Harold John and his wife, Ronelle of Smithland, Iowa, David Matthew and his special friend, Cathy Bailes of Zainville, Ohio, Zachary Todd and his wife, Kim of Schoolcraft, Mich. and Roy Martin Mace and his special friend, Sandy Bush of Hornick; three daughters, Rhonda Linn and her husband, Allen John Landreneau of Sulphur, La., Brenda Lee and her husband, Larry Poole of Tracy, Calif. and Christine Rasmussen of Le Mars, Iowa and her special friend, Ed Anderson; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Alvin Arthur; three brothers, Thomas Marnell, Arthur Marnell and Harry Nelson; and three sisters, Laura Overbeck, Lillian Moore and Alice Bjorkland.
