Gerald W. "Shorty" Nelson, age 82 of Oto, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 15, 2004 in Mapleton.

A gathering of family and friends was held Monday, December 20 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton.

Gerald William "Shorty" Nelson was born March 7, 1922, at Turin, Iowa, the son of Harry and Meta (Mandelco) Nelson. He was united in marriage to Betty Jean McClure on March 25, 1944, at Onawa, Iowa. The couple lived at Whiting, Iowa. In 1957, they moved to a farm in the Climbing Hill and Oto area where he lived the rest of his life. Betty Jean died September 27, 1991.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Nelson of Anthon, Iowa; three sons, James of Oto, Iowa, Dave of Iowa, and Harold of Texas; four grandchildren, Bob Nelson, Jennifer Knutson, Thomas Ferdig, and Tracy Nelson; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Lenora Gloyer, Maxine Christianson, and Shirley Richardson and her husband, Guy, all of Whiting, Iowa; two brothers, John and his wife, Eva, also of Whiting and Raymond of Mapleton, Iowa.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
