Edith L. Maier of Mapleton was called to celebrate Christmas with her Savior, family and friends on Monday, December 20, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 23 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton with Pastor Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton.. Mary Joan Dougherty was born the organist and soloist for the service and she sang, "On Eagle's Wings". The congregation sang, "Amazing Grace", "How Great Thou Art" and "There's Something About That Name". The postlude was "I'll Be Home For Christmas". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Edith Louise Lee was born to Edward M. and Ada (Smith) Lee March 20, 1926 in Cherokee, Iowa. As a child she lived in Cherokee, Ida Grove, and Mapleton. She graduated from Mapleton High School with the Class of 1944. She then attended Methodist School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Leonard F. Maier on January 27, 1946 at St. John's Methodist Church in Mapleton. To this union were born two children - Nicolett and Edward Maier.

She lived most of her married life in Mapleton. She was a 60 year member of St. John's United Methodist Church having taught Sunday school, served as chair for the annual Smorgasbord dinner and sung in the choir for over 25 years. She was a life member of Rose Croix Chapter #400 Order of the Eastern Star, having been initiated in Isis Chapter in Sioux City in 1945. A special spot was reserved in her heart for the Order of Rainbow Girls. She served as Worthy Advisor as a girl and Mother Advisor as an adult.

Another special area in her life was Scouting. She started Girl Scouts in Mapleton in 1958 after many years of inactivity. She served as troop organizer for seven troops of over 60 girls and served a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. She served as Den Mother for Den 7 of Cub Scouts and actively supported her husband and later son as Scoutmasters.

She enjoyed music and was a talented musician. She passed this love of music onto her children. She taught over 50 children a week to play the piano and enjoy music lifelong. Her students play in many churches today.

Edith was deeply involved in the painting and decorating of eggshells. She turned this hobby into a business called. "Our Nest Egg.," selling decorated and undecorated eggs all over the world.

Her main love was her family. Her children benefited from her love, support, and sound advice. She never missed her daughter's school music programs or community theater performances. She was devoted cheerleader for her son in his business, professional and scouting activities. She was a faithful and devoted wife.

She is survived by Leonard Maier, her husband and caretaker of 58 years, and a son, Edward L. Maier of Mapleton. She also leaves a host of friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nicolett, her parents and a brother-in-law, Leo Maier.

Pallbearers were Don Muckey, Russ Worrell, Keith Robinson, Tom McNamara, Pete Christophersen and Gary Thies.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
