Elva June "Sooner" Uhl, 73, Onawa, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at Burgess Health Center, Onawa.

Elva June was born June 9, 1931 at Onawa, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Matilda Ann (Carr) James. She was raised and educated in the Onawa and Mapleton areas.

She married Lawrence Leo Uhl. The couple moved their family to the East Coast where she was a waitress at various cafes. The family always enjoyed their summer vacations returning to Mapleton and visiting Grandma James who owned and operated the Home Café. They later moved to Mapleton but again, returned to the East Coast. After her children were raised, Elva returned to Onawa to her roots, and in the past years had entered Elmwood Care Centre, Onawa where she was chosen Valentine Queen this month.

She was a member of First Christian Church and was a member of a Bible Class. Elva loved her mid west heritage and enjoyed country music and cowboy movies.

Survivors include her seven children and their spouses, Michael and Ann of NJ, Cass and Butch Hudson of NJ, Debbie and Joe Tillo of PA, Pamela Whitehead of NJ, Anita and Nick Masino of NJ, Steve and Kim Uhl of PA, and Cindy Uhl of NJ; twenty-two grandchildren, Dawn, Jess, Michael, Miranda, Joshua, Jessica, Brandon, Brianna, Jeremy, Steven, David, Aaron, Brian, Nicholas, Zachary, Becky, Kristie, Alicia, Christopher, Jennifer, Jason and Michael; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Kelly, and two sisters and their husbands, Wanda and Francis Heisler of Onawa and Darlene and E.B. Woodward of Cherokee, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Leta Belt and Lila Barclay and a brother, Robert James.

Memorial services were 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005, at First Christian Church, Onawa with Rev. Dennis Olsen officiating. Music selections were "How Great Thou Art" and Just A Closer Walk With Thee" with Patti Gibson, soloist and Mardelle Brown, organist. There was no visitation. Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa.
