Ed Pranschke, age 86 of Mapleton, Iowa, died Thursday, May 12, 2005 in Denison.

Services were held 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 16 at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with Rev. Dr. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery, Mapleton. Marie Whiteing was the organist and soloist for the service. She sang, "Oh, Love That Will Not Let Me Go", "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" and "I Surrender All". Pastor Kathie Brown sang, "I Bowed My Knees". A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with Pastor Kathie Brown officiating.

Edward Carl Pranschke was born June 10, 1918, in Crawford County Iowa, on a farm southwest of Charter Oak, Iowa, the son of Edward Otto Pranschke and Augusta (Henshen) Pranschke. Ed respected his parents and served as a caregiver to them in later years.

He attended country school near Charter Oak, Iowa and also Mapleton, Iowa, receiving a certificate from his teacher for being an excellent student.

At the age of 18, he joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp), helping build parks, and buildings in Iowa for the Government.

On April 4, 1941, he was united in marriage to Viola Lydia Kroll. They made their home in Ute, Iowa, where he worked for Walt Jahn. In 1945, they moved to a farm near Soldier, Iowa and worked for Jelmer Nelson. In 1955, they moved to the Roswell Chrisman farm at Castana, where Ed was the Livestock Manager, giving them excellent care for many years, receiving a letter of commendation from his employer, Mr. Chrisman, for his exemplary job.

Viola died on February 6, 1976. Ed then moved to Sioux City, Iowa, working in construction with his nephew, Vernon Hesse.

In 1984, Ed retired and lived at his home in Mapleton, Iowa, until 2002, when he entered Eventide Home in Denison where he received very special care.

Ed loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and watching the birds. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed being with them when he could, taking them fishing and hiking in the outdoors.

He is survived by two daughters, Jan Johnson and her husband, Bob, of Sioux City, Iowa and Jeannette Pranschke of Mapleton, Iowa; a grandson, Guy Johnson and his wife, Karen, of Sioux City, Iowa, their children, Alex, Ross, and Kyle Johnson; a granddaughter, Glenda Vollmer of Arkansas City, Kansas and her son, Nicholas Vollmer.

Along with his wife, Ed was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Pallbearers were Guy Johnson, Alex Johnson, Ross Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Nicholas Vollmer and Mike Malone.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
