Rita C. Owens, age 91 of Mapleton, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at Morningside Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11 at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with Msgr. Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Marie Whiteing was the organist for the service.

Rita Caroline Owens was born October 22, 1913, at Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Margaret (Neary) Draper. She grew up and was educated in Sioux City. On August 10, 1954, Rita married Gerald Owens, Sr. in Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple owned and operated a bar for about six years in Correctionville, Iowa before moving to Mapleton, Iowa where they owned and operated the Spare Time. Gerald died April 6, 1967. Rita moved to Danbury, Iowa in 1975 where she resided until October of 1998 when she moved to the Morningside Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City where she remained until her death June 7, 2005.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Loren Hollister Unit #496 of Mapleton and the Red Hat Society at the nursing home.

Survivors include a sister, Mildred Miller of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; a step-son, Jim Owens of Mapleton, Iowa; a step-daughter, Patricia Gayhart of Portland, Oregon; and several nieces and nephews as well as Barb Mossberg, who Rita raised, of Wichita, Kansas.

Along with her husband, Rita was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jerry; five sisters, Jean Cosmano, Frances Rumsey, Alberta Seek, Wilma Reynolds and Josephine Hansen; and one infant brother.

Pallbearers were T.J. Walsh, Ron Russell, Gary Lamprecht, Bobby Lamprecht, John Huff and Blacey Bennett.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
