Marie McNeil, age 94, of Mapleton, IA, joined her Eternal Savior on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at a Sioux City nursing and rehab center.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dr. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in Kennebec Cemetery at Castana, Iowa. Karen Krusen was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, "Nearer My God To Thee", "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". Visitation was held at the Armstrong Chapel in Mapleton after 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 13 and a prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m.

Marie Alvina Hauschildt McNeil was born on June 2, 1911, to proud parents John and Meta Hauschildt in Midway, Iowa. She was baptized on July 19, 1911, into the Lutheran faith in Schleswig, Iowa. On July 22, 1939, she was united in marriage to Ernest McNeil in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Ernest and Marie were confirmed together at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton on April 2, 1948. They farmed and raised their children in Danbury and Mapleton for many years. They moved to Mapleton and, shortly after, Ernest passed away in 1967.

Marie continued working at Maple Heights Nursing Home until her retirement and worked at several restaurants in the Mapleton area. She was later employed as a housekeeper for many families and churches. Marie decided after 73 years of life it was time to get her diploma. She returned to school and received her diploma on April 2, 1985.

Marie enjoyed sewing, playing cards, flowers and gardening. She looked forward to friends and family visits and would always cook up a feast. She held family close to her heart.

Those survivors left to cherish their memories of Marie include one son, Byron McNeil and his wife, Marilyn of Corpus Christi, TX; and one daughter, Ilona Stapleton and her husband, Clifford of Sioux City, IA. Marie had five grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and many beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest; her great grandson, P.J. Asher; four brothers, Edward, Harold, Theodore, and Rudy who died in infancy; and four sisters, Ann Boche, Hannah Lintin, Meta Ruchti, and Luella Norby.

Pallbearers were Corey Day, Tyron McNeil, Robert Asher, Larry Ruchti, Gary Henneous and Lloyd Meyer, Jr.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
