Evelyn A. "Evy" Nielsen, age 85, of Battle Creek, Iowa, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 13, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Kevin J. Freese officiated the service, with burial following in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek. Friends called at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Battle Creek on Sunday from 2-6 p.m., with the family present from 4-6 p.m.

Born October 17, 1920, in rural Ute, Iowa, Evelyn A. Nielsen was the daughter of Andrew Jensen and Martha Christina (Mogensen) Andersen. She grew up and received her education in Mapleton, graduating from Mapleton High School in 1938. She was then employed at the B.H. Morrison Law Office for several years, and also served as Secretary to the Mapleton Board of Education. Evy was later employed by the Office of Price Administration as chief clerk of the War Price and Rationing Office in Mapleton.

On September 15, 1945, she was united in marriage to Howard C. Nielsen at the United Church of Christ in Mapleton. The couple settled near Battle Creek where they farmed for many years. They moved into Battle Creek in 1983.

Evy was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. She was a wonderful cook and will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Survivors include two children and their spouses, Marilyn and Merle Dausel and Wayne and Diana Nielsen, all of Battle Creek; five grandchildren, Mindee Pravecek of Sioux Falls, SD, Marcy Basche and husband Chad of Elkhorn, NE, Amy Harrison and husband Corey of Urbandale, Ashley Dean and husband Brandon of Ankeny, and Robb Nielsen of Battle Creek; six great-grandchildren, MeKayla, Madysen, and Dausyn Pravecek, Brooklyn and Bayne Basche, and Ryan Harrison.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999; her parents; two sisters, Gladys Passick and Doris Van Ohlen.
