Leonard C. Clingenpeel, age 81 of Mapleton, died Saturday, April 10, 2004 in Mapleton.

Services were held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 13 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with Jackie Girdner, Hospice Chaplain officiating. Burial was in Belvedere Cemetery, Turin, Iowa, with military graveside honors by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. Connie Bridgeman was the organist for the service and music included "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross". The congregation sang, "In The Garden" and "Amazing Grace".

Leonard Carl Clingenpeel was born June 20, 1922, at Charter Oak, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Sydna (Samuelson) Clingenpeel. He grew up and received his education in the area. During World War II, Leonard served his country in the United States Navy, having been on three different ships, the last being the U.S.S. Aaron Ward. After his honorable discharge, Leonard returned home.

On March 31, 1951, he was united in marriage to Nellie Wagner at Dakota City, Nebraska. The couple farmed in Monona and Woodbury Counties until settling on a farm near Mapleton in 1968. They moved into Mapleton in 1985.

He was a member of the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton.

Survivors include Nellie, his wife of 53 years; seven children, Carl and his wife, Forough, of Aurora, Illinois, Lyle and his wife, Lori, of Sioux City, Iowa, Linda Hollan and her husband, Terry, of Miami, Oklahoma, William and his wife, Barbara, of Snyder, Texas, LaNelle Barker and her husband, Robert, of Castana, Iowa, Judy Corzine and her husband, Allen, of Topeka, Kansas, and Shirley Vonderhaar and her husband, William, of New Vienna, Iowa; 21 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Russel and Phyllis Clingenpeel of Sioux City, Iowa and Art and Elsie Clingenpeel of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and two sisters and their husbands, Leila and Ernest Shupe of Turin, Iowa and Irene and Ed McClellan of Onawa, Iowa.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and twin grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Carl Clingenpeel, Lyle Clingenpeel, William Clingenpeel, Nick Moser, Randy Moser and William Vonderhaar.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
