Lloyd Earl Johnston, 65, Smithland area farmer, died Friday in a Sioux City hospital after a short illness.

Services were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Ticonic United Methodist Church. The Rev Dick Krambeck officiated. Burial was in Grant Township Cemetery, near Rodney. There was a prayer service at 7:oo p.m. Monday in the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr Johnston was born May 18, 1918, near Smithland to Earl B and Minnie (Clift) Johnston. He operated a trucking and corn shelling business in the Holly Springs and Hornick area for about five years. He married Carrie Skow August 18, 1939, at Dakota City. They farmed four miles southeast of Smithland for the last 28 years and spent the winters in the south for the last ten years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ticonic, trustee of Grant Township, past member of the Holly Springs school board, member of Maple Heights Nursing Home and member of Willow Vale Golf Club of Mapleton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Walter.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Melvin of Smithland and Earl of Mapleton; two daughters, Mrs Ronald (Margaret Ann) Maynard and Mrs Greg (Dawn) Claus, both of Smithland; one brother, Roy of Plano, Texas; three sisters, Mrs Cleland (Edna) Stow of Magalia, California, Mrs Thomas (Lilly) Flewelling of Moville, and Mrs Marty Sieger of Hornick; 11 grandchildren and one great grandson.

Pallbearers were Leslie Maynard, Chester Claus, Davis Johnson, Max Smith and his two grandsons, Michael Maynard and Mark Maynard.
