17 July 1980John Gilman McClatchey was born December 22, 1898 to James and Melissa McClatchey in Stedman, Missouri. At the age of 14 he moved with his parents to a farm near Castana, Iowa. In 1919 they moved to Whiting, Iowa, where they were engaged in farming. In 1922, John began working for the Milwaukee Railroad near Grant Center. He later became a section foreman.
He was united in marriage with Ella Lorenzen on December 5, 1923. They moved to Manilla in 1934 where John continued his job as section foreman. He retired from the Milwaukee Railroad in 1963. John and Ella celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 5, 1973.
John was a member of the United Methodist Church where he had served on the board.
He died at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla on July 12, 1980 at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 20 days, following a short illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ronald Dean; three brothers, Jim, Christy and Homer; one sister, Mrs Adolph (Nannie) Schmidt.
He is survived by his wife, Ella and the following children, Annabel, Mrs Jim Myhre of Sloughhouse, California; Sylvia, Mrs Alvin Bandow of Alden, Iowa; Earl of Parkersburg, Iowa; Carl of Manilla; Gail of Fountain Valley, California; Karen, Mrs George Jahn of Gretna, Nebraska; Shirley, Mrs Richard Hanson of Applington, Iowa; and Linda, Mrs Ron Olson of DeWitt, Iowa. By 26 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Also by one sister, Mrs Jim (Alice) Pullen of Hornick, Iowa.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 15, 1980 at 10:00 p.m. in the United Methodist Church at Manilla with Reverend Donald Jones officiating. Vocalist was Kay Rutherford who was accompanied by the organist, Barbara Agan.
Interment was in Grant Cemetery at Rodney, Iowa.
Casketbearers were Randolfe Bandow, Carl McClkatchey Jr, Richard Hanson Jr, James McClatchey, Daryl Jahn and Troy Olson. Honorary casketbearers were Rickey Myhre, Ronald Bandow, Russell Bandow, Jeff Doyle, Joe Doyle, Jack Doyle and John McClatchery.
