Wayne LaDean Houchins, age 65, of Marcus, Iowa, died Thursday, May 22, 1997 at his residence.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. Rev Ronald Kramer officiated. Organist at the service was Randy Benton and John Schneider sang, "How Great Thou Art" and "Hymn of Promise". Serving as ballbearers were Jerry Martin, Gary White, Perry Uhl, Jim Lens, Jason Rainboth, Darrin Jones and Pete Johannsen.

Wayne Houchins was born March 16, 1932 at Ticonic, Iowa. He was the son of Wayne E and Opal C (Lundeen) Houchins. He attended school at Ticonic and graduated from High School in Castana, Iowa. Hew received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Westmar College in LeMars, his masters Degree from University of Northern Colorado at Greeley, Colorado and Doctor of Psychology from the University of Alabama. He had taught school at Anthon. He taught school and was Guidance Counselor at Marcus High School from 1962 until 1968. He had taught school on the College level for some twenty-eight years at Northwest Louisiana State and Southwest Louisiana State. He taught two years at Westmar College and one year at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. After retiring he returned to Marcus where he resided until the time of his death.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Japan.

An avid bridge player he was a member of the Lafayette, Louisiana Townhouse Duplicate Bridge Club.

Survivors include his mother, Opal Houchins of Marcus; a sister, Verdetta Peterson of Marcus and three nieces, Penny and her husband, Bob Jones of Sloan, Iowa, Julie and her husband, Ron Johannsen of Primghar, Iowa and Vicki and her husband, Clark Rainboth of Marcus and eight great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and brother-in-law, Carlyle Peterson.

Arrangements were made under the directions of the Earnest and Roethler Funeral Home of Marcus.
