Josephine Margaret Hewitt was born one of 10 children to Harry and Cora (Hessig) Ferdig on Feb. 13, 1919, at Mapleton, Iowa. She grew up and was educated in the area.

On July 3, 1936, she was united in marriage to Claire Hewitt at Onawa, Iowa. For 62 years, the couple made their home in the same house in Rodney, except for the time Josephine accompanied her husband while he was on the road working in construction. They both moved to Char-Mac Assisted Living In Lawton, Iowa, in 2003. Claire passed away on Aug. 2, 2004. In March 2005, Josephine entered Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City, where she resided until her death.

Josephine was a gifted cook, raising and preserving all she could from her garden. She and her husband shared a sincere love for dancing. They were also very involved in the community, donating time, food, talent or whatever was needed for the moment at hand, especially the Rodney Senior Citizens. Above all, Josephine was a happy, friendly spirit, with a total dedication to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma King of Sioux City; a son, Jan Hewitt and his wife, Lynda of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter, Joetta Burkhart of Lawton; seven grandsons; three granddaughters; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother in Kansas; along with many good friends.

Along with her husband of 68 years, Josephine was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Garry; a son-in-law; and eight brothers and sisters.
