RODNEY, Iowa -- Claire L. Hewitt, 87, of Lawton, Iowa, formerly of Rodney, died Monday, Aug. 2,, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Grant Cemetery, near Rodney. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Claire LaVerne Hewitt was born Jan. 3, 1917, in Rodney, to Loren and Lulu (Carman) Hewitt. He resided there until December 2003, when he and his wife moved into Char-Mac Assisted Living in Lawton.

He married Josephine Ferdig on July 3, 1936. He was in the trucking business most of his early days until semi-retiring in 1978. He also worked as a motorgrader operator in road construction. The last few years, he was employed by his son, Jan, in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Jo; a daughter and her husband, Norma and Jay King of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Jan and Lynda Hewitt of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter, Joetta Burkhart of Lawton; seven grandsons; three granddaughters; 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wanda Ford of Mapleton, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by a son, Garry; his parents; and two sisters, Erma Studyvin and Reatha Decker.
