MOVILLE, Iowa -- Arnold "A.J." Grell, Sr., 83, of Moville, formerly of Hornick, Mapleton and Danbury, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hornick United Methodist Church in Hornick. Burial will be in Grant Cemetery near Rodney, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Arnold John "A.J." Grell Sr. was born Aug. 19, 1919 in Crawford County, the son of Matthiaus and Alveena (Carstens) Grell. He grew up and was educated north of Denison, Iowa.

On Feb. 8, 1941, he married Velma "Molly" Carter in Mapleton. He first farmed north of Danbury and in 1934 established Grell Trucking in Danbury. In 1948, while still working part-time for Grell Trucking, he started farming on the family farm where they raised their family. He retired in 1983 and moved into Hornick, where he worked for area farmers. In 1997, he moved to Moville and resided there until December 2001, when he entered Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City. He remained there until his death, Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002.

A.J. was a member of Hornick United Methodist Church. He truly enjoyed the winters he spent in Texas and playing cards with family and friends. He also liked horses and would enjoy watching the chuck wagon races at the fair. Anyone that knew A.J. could expect him to reply with a joke or witty comment which he demonstrated until his last days. The greatest joy in his life, however, was found in his extended family.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include four daughters, Cora Howley and her husband, Jack of Del Rio, Texas, Sarah Persinger and her husband, Rex of Hornick, Katie Persinger and her husband, Mark of Hornick and Velma Meyer and her husband, Randy of Hornick; three sons, Arnold "Butch" Grell and his wife, Charlene of Moville, Willie Grell and his wife, LuAnn of Hornick and Eddie Grell of Soldier, Iowa; a son-in-law, Ron Jacoby of Danbury; 27 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Freddie and Yvonnie Grell of Danbury; two sisters, Jeanette Johnson of Whiting, Iowa and Betty Paulsen and her husband, Pete of Deloit, Iowa; along with many other relatives, neighbors and friends.

A.J. was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Bonnie Jacoby; an infant son; a granddaughter, Alina Kay Grell and four sisters, Marie Kroph, Emma Lehmann, Dorothy Scheer and Edna Cram.
