CASTANA, Iowa -- Gordon M. Lane, 89, of Castana died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery, rural Rodney, Iowa, with military rites conducted by American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Gordon Milford Lane was born June 12, 1914, in Saskatchewan, Canada, to Francis and Helma (Christiansen) Lane. He lived in Dayon, N.D., and Griggla, Minn., moving to Castana in 1929. There he grew up, farming until he graduated from Mapleton High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a World War II prisoner of war veteran. He was released from prison camp in July 1945 and honorably discharged in October 1945.

On Dec. 5, 1945, he was united in marriage to Delia Parkhill in Sioux City. Upon returning home to Iowa, he farmed for awhile. He then went into heavy construction, retiring at the age of 62.

He always continued on with his military connections. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, proudly serving as commander service officer and vice commander. He belonged to the Disabled American Veterans and was also a commander of that organization. He was a P.O.W. member and state commander for three years and belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Purple Heart Association, serving in many positions.

He is survived by his wife, Delia M. (Parkhill) Lane of Ute, Iowa; four children, Sharon K. and her husband, Steve Lanvermeier of Old Monroe, Mo., Michael "Coke" Lane and his wife, Colleen of Mapleton, Roxann Ohlmeier of Ute, Iowa, and Jeffrey A. Lane of Loveland, Colo.; two sisters, Lavernie Swanson of Madua, Calif., and Eunice "June" Zediker of Sioux City; 12 grandkids; five stepgrandkids; seven great-grandkids; 10 great-stepgrandkids; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of neighbors and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lloyd, who was killed in World War II, and Raymond "Bob" Lane; and two sisters, Helen "Totty" Swain and Myrtle Steffen.
