She was united in marriage to Ward Cleveland Jr. on Oct. 24, 1937. She worked at various jobs during her life time including, wallpapering with Edna Davis and assembly line work at the Battery Company in Sioux City. After the Battery Company closed, she decided to further her education by attending business school in Sioux City. She then worked as a secretary at Whiting State Bank, Hornick State Bank and the Woodbury County Extension Service, from which she retired in 1978. She was a 60-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary Hindman-Steele Post 492, actively participating until moving to Ida Grove. As a 50-year member of the Hornick Methodist Church, she held various offices and also was a faithful member of the choir. In 1998, after moving to Ida Grove due to health concerns, she transferred her membership to the Ida Grove First United Methodist Church. She entered Morningside Rehab and Care Center in October 1998. After a brief return to their apartment in Ida Grove, she made Morningside Rehab and Care Center her home until her death.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers, reading, music and family get togethers. She took great pride and joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and in the musical career of her great-niece, country music star, Shannon Brown.
