MARCUS, Iowa -- Opal Cecelia Houchins, 93, of Marcus died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus, with the Rev. Roger Henry officiating. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Grant Cemetery in Ticonic, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Earnest and Roethler Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Houchins was born Sept. 1, 1908, near Ticonic, the daughter of Charles P. and Ida M. (Smothers) Lundeen. She was baptized at Ticonic Methodist Church and attended rural schools. She married Wayne Houchins on Nov. 21, 1925, in Onawa, Iowa. They farmed for 18 years. She had been a resident of Heartland Care Center since 1999.

She was a lifelong member of Ticonic Methodist Church and United Methodist Women of the Church. She enjoyed her flower garden, doing crossword puzzles, embroidery work, reading and her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Verdetta Peterson of Marcus; three granddaughters, Penny Jones and her husband, Bob of Sloan, Iowa, Julie Johannsen and her husband, Ron of Paullina, Iowa, and Vickie Rainboth and her husband, Clark of Marcus; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Paulyne Cleveland of Loveland, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Wayne; three sisters, Esther, Blanche and Hilda; and five brothers, Clarence, Wesley, John, Earl and Ralph.
