Orlo S. Johnson

CASTANA, Iowa - Orlo Sevien Johnson, 90, of Castana died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ticonic United Methodist Church in Ticonic, Iowa, with the Rev. Shirley Textor officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Mr. Johnson was born July 13, 1909, in Moorhead, Iowa, the son of Julius and "Gertie" (Lauritseh) Johnson. He attended school in Moorhead. He moved with his family to Regan, N.D., in 1925. They returned to Iowa in 1934.

He married Wilma Miller on Sept. 16, 1936. The couple made their home in the Ticonic area and farmed until retiring in the late 1970s. She died Dec. 23, 1993. He remained on the farm until entering Pleasant View Care Center in June 1999.

He was a member of Ticonic United Methodist Church and served as a trustee for Grant Township. He enjoyed wintering in Texas and fishing.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Steve and Debra of Castana; three grandchildren, Jennifer Goslar, Carey (Burson) Smeltzer and Seth Johnson; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Jordahl of Northfield, Minn.; a stepsister, Gudrun Johnson of Le Mars, Iowa; and three stepbrothers, Julius Jordahl of Brunswick, Ga., Randolph Jordahl of Fresno, Calif., and Norman Jordahl of Albuquerque, N.M.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Steinar Jordahl; a brother, Emil Johnson; and two stepbrothers, Ben and Kenmar Jordahl.

Longtime farmer in Ticonic area dies

Orlo Sevien Johnson, 90, of Ticonic, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Whiting, Iowa.

Memorial services were held 2 p.m. Monday, February 7 at the Ticonic United Methodist Church in Ticonic, Iowa, with the Pastor Shirley Textor officiating. Marie Whiteing was the organist for the service and Louis Aitken was the vocalist and accompanist. Music included “Life’s Railroad to Heaven” and “Amazing Grace”. The congregation sang, “In The Garden”. Arrangements were handled by the Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.

Orlo Sevien Johnson was born July 13, 1909, in Moorhead, Iowa, the son of Julius and "Gertie" (Lauritseh) Johnson. He attended school in Moorhead. His father died in 1920. Orlo moved with his mother, brother and sister to Regan, N.D., in 1925. In 1926, his mother married Steinard Jordahl, a widower with six children. The family moved back to Iowa in 1934.

Orlo was united in marriage to Wilma Miller on Sept. 16, 1936. They settled in the Ticonic, Iowa area and farmed until retiring in the late 1970s. They enjoyed spending time in Texas in the winter and Orlo went fishing in Canada each summer for several years. Wilma died Dec. 23, 1993. Orlo remained on the farm until June 1999 when he moved to Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa..

He was a member of Ticonic United Methodist Church and served as Grant Township Trustee for over 50 years.

He is survived by one son, Steve and his wife, Debra of Castana, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jennifer Goslar and her husband Kevin of Mapleton, Iowa, Carey (Burson) Smeltzer and her husband Brian of Glenwood, Iowa and Seth Johnson of Ames, Iowa; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Jordahl of Northfield, Minn.; one step-sister, Gudrun Johnson of Le Mars, Iowa; and three step-brothers, Julius Jordahl of Brunswick, Ga., Randolph Jordahl of Fresno, Calif., and Norman Jordahl of Albuquerque, N.M, along with other relatives, neighbors and friends.

Along with his wife, Orlo was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Emil Johnson and two step-brothers, Ben and Kenmar Jordahl.
