MAPLETON, Iowa - Leonard E. "Tuey" Newman, 83, of Mapleton, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with the Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial will be in Grant Cemetery in Rodney, Iowa. Visitation will be Monday beginning at 4 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home.

Mr. Newman was born Nov. 24, 1916, at Ticonic, Iowa, the son of Charles Orval and Dora (Peacock) Newman. He grew up and was educated in the area. From 1936 to 1937 he served with the Conservation Core Camp. He married Ethel Mary Treiber on July 19, 1937, in Marshalltown, Iowa. They lived and farmed in the Anthon, Iowa area from 1937 to 1941. From 1941 to 1975, they farmed outside of Mapleton. In 1975, they retired and moved into Mapleton. Mrs. Newman died July 29, 1988.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Jerry and Mavis of Madrid, Iowa, and Roy and Patty of Piedmont, Okla.; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Newman of Alma, Ark.; five grandchildren, Cindy McClelland, Lei Lani Tilson, Leisa Ryder, Alan Newman, and Don Newman; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Leland "Pi" Newman and his wife, Betty, of Ida Grove, Iowa; one sister, Beulah Lucas of Mapleton; and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Roger; three brothers, Charles Jr, John and Fred; and one sister, Sylvia Muckey.
