Ladean W. "Digger" Ferdig, 62, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. LeRoy Strubble officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery, Rodney, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Ferdig was born Feb. 24, 1940, in Smithland, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Lillian (Hollbrook) Ferdig. He was raised in the Smithland and Sioux City areas.

He married Sharon Thibodeau in 1960, in Sioux City. She preceded him in death. He moved to Texas in 1970, where he was employed with Dow Chemical as a pipe welder. He moved back to Sioux City in 1997.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and visiting his brother in Texas. He spent his early retirement days hunting, fishing, drawing and painting pictures for his great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Rickey Ferdig, Jeffery Ferdig and Bruce Ferdig, all of Sioux City; two daughters, Shirley VanThuyne of Sergeant Bluff, and Charlotte Hoffman of Sioux City; a sister, Marie Berndt of Sioux City; a brother, Jan Ferdig of Freeport, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Clyde Clayton, Roxanne, Nicole, Travis, Rickey Jr., Jessica and Shelby Ferdig, Tina and Tracie VanThuyne and Derek Pace; and four great-grandchildren, Kehona Ferdig-Medina, Brieanna Ferdig, Anthony Medina and Joel Ross Ford III.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Fern Gardner; and a brother, LeRoy Ferdig.
