SOLDIER, Iowa -- Elvin Leroy Heistand, 79, of Soldier went to his heavenly home Monday, March 30, 2009, at his home in Soldier.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Soldier Lutheran Church at Soldier, with Pastor Meggan Manlove officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Elvin Leroy was born Dec. 26, 1929, at Moorhead, Iowa, the son of Roy and Minnie (Lovell) Heistand. He was raised in the Moorhead area and graduated from Moorhead High School.

Elvin and Norma Nordaker exchanged wedding vows Aug. 4, 1949, at Soldier Lutheran Church. He was a lifelong farmer, loved his work and enjoyed raising livestock.

Elvin was baptized and confirmed at Soldier Lutheran Church in 1949. He served on the Church Council and Soldier Town Council.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Norma; a son and his wife, Richard and Nancy of Woodbine, Iowa; three grandchildren, Chad Heistand and his wife, Colleen of Dunlap, Iowa, Stacie Harmon and her special friend, Bob Lane of Marysville, Ohio, and Lex Jacobson and his wife, Stephanie of Ida Grove, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Preston and Breanna Chase of Spencer, Iowa, Peyton Heistand of Marysville and Gwendolyn and Cecily Jacobson of Ida Grove; and three sisters, Lavonne Armstrong of Moorhead, Bernadine Raymond of Onawa and Betty Gray of Onawa.

He was preceded in death by a son, Michael; his parents; and his father and mother-in-law.
