SOLDIER, Iowa -- Virginia M. (Renz) Stevens, 74, of Soldier died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital after suffering a stroke.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Soldier Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap, Iowa.

Virginia married LeRoy Stevens on May 2, 1954. The couple were blessed with two children. She worked at Headstart for 29 years, retiring in 2006.

She was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church and WELCA. After retirement, she enjoyed her Bible study group, reading, attending various clubs, volunteering with Hospice and swimming with her friends. She also was an avid walker. Her favorite activity by far was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they were her greatest joy.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, LeRoy Stevens of Soldier; a son, Maynard (Marilyn) Stevens of Lawrence, Kan.; a daughter, Cathy (Joel) Shanahan of Ute, Iowa; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Tom (Lotte) Renz of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Bill (Karen) Renz of Deloit, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jerry Renz; two sisters and their husbands, Anna Maxine and Virgil "Ole" Lary and Ruth Jean and Henry Kroll; and a nephew, Calvin Kroll.
