Charles Ernst, a retired farmer, passed away early Monday morning in his home here on South 3rd street. He suffered a stroke while on the bus coming home from Sioux City Sunday evening. He had been in poor health for some time.
Funeral services will be held in St Mary's Catholic Church Saturday morning. Rev A.H. Ocken, pastor of the church, will conduct the services, with the Olerich Funeral home in charge of burial in St Marys Cemetery.
He was born near Mapleton. With Mrs Ernst he resided in Nebraska about 15 years before coming to Mapleton a year ago when they purchased the Howard "Johnny" Powell house on South 3rd Street. He was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church.
He is survived by his widow, 5 sons, all in the service, PVT Steve Ernst and PVT Charles Ernst Jr who were inducted this month, Sgt Everett Ernst in a hospital in England, Dave Ernst of the Navy in San Diego, Cal and PVT Ray Ernst of the Infantry who went overseas this month and two daughters, Louise of Los Angeles and Barbara of Creighton, Neb
Mr. Ernst who was 56 years old and a son of the late Mr and Mrs Louis Ernst, also is survived by 3 sisters, Mrs Tina Nanty of Anthon, Mrs Lizzie Butler of Los Angeles and Mrs Ella Harris: and 5 brothers, Joe and Will of Mapleton, Henry of Sioux City, Jake of Creighton and T.G of California.
