ONAWA, Iowa -- J. Mardell Denney, 78, of Onawa died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Steven Hetzel officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Blencoe, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Mardell was born Aug. 1, 1925, in Soldier, Iowa, the daughter of Lauritz and Julia (Bryleson) Frydenlund. She graduated from Soldier High School in 1942, and received a teaching certificate at Cedar Falls (Iowa) Teachers College. She taught country school in the Soldier area and later Blencoe Community School.
She married Vern B. Denney on Aug. 8, 1948, in Soldier. The couple farmed in the Monona County area. She was a homemaker and worked at Jubilee Foods for 22 years, before retiring in 1990. Vern passed away March 14, 1994, in Onawa.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and served on numerous church boards. She was an active volunteer in the community, serving on the 4-H Extension Council, Elmwood Care Centre, Burgess Memorial Hospital and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed traveling and found special joy with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the neighborhood kids.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Joel Koenig of Whiting, Iowa, and Jolene and Lon Ulven of Onawa; a son, Neal Denney and Cathy Bryan of Whiting; four grandchildren, Jeremy and Rikki Reynolds of Ontario, Canada, Lori and Rod Richardson of Webb, Iowa, Chad and Bobbi Jo Miller of Houston, Texas, and Matt Miller of Sloan, Iowa; three great-grandchildren; her mother-in-law, Ida Denney; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two infant sons, David and Leon; her parents; a brother, Stanley Frydenlund; her father-in-law, Floyd Denney; and a son-in-law, Rick Reynolds.
